Research project in the second semester at Maastricht University
Project description
The aim of this group project was to extract ICD-10 codes from medical texts. This served as a proof-of-concept to explore whether such a possibility also exists for laymans' descriptions of their symptoms.

Goal
In this group project, we explored whether it is possible to detect paroxysmal atrial fibrillation early on the basis of ECG recordings and thus improve treatment success. For this purpose, we used both signal processing methods (pre-treatment, noise removal, statistical evaluation) and machine learning methods.

In this project, I looked at ways to determine the skeletal age of children using machine learning. Bone age is an important measure to classify the growth progress of a child. Currently, these determinations are still largely done by hand. Therefore, this project aims at finding ways to automate this determination and possibly be more accurate later on.

Project description
Attendance control for an event where more than a handful of participants are present is often still done with handwritten signatures on a piece of paper. In this project, I have developed a novel method of checking attendance, in which the person's smartphone serves as a unique identifier.
In advance, each participant has to install and register an app on their device. Afterwards, scanning a QR code during the event is sufficient to determine attendance.

Serious Game
Project Description
The user is immersed in the role of a disaster control officer of the city of Aachen. They are tasked with protecting the city from an impending heavy rain event. To do this, they have measures at their disposal which must be used strategically due to a limited budget.
In the course of the game, a heavy rain event is announced by the respective weather service. Now things have to move quickly, because there is not much time left. Short-term measures, such as blocking roads or distributing sandbags, have to be taken. The storm leaves as quickly as it arrived. Now the game calculates the damage caused. The measures implemented long term and those taken in the short term influence the score.
The game was developed under the direction of the LFI. Thus, the implementation was scientifically accompanied and reflects the current scientific status. Therefore, it is suitable as a so-called serious game for imparting knowledge and for use in lectures.
